Help Your Child Sleep Through The Night
Here are 5 tips on how to help your child fall asleep soundly:
1. Monitor TV Watching Before Bed
If your child is watching TV or a Movie before their bedtime, make sure they aren't watching any frightening images. Although the show may not scare the child while viewing, images may creep up into their mind later, making it 100x more frightening when alone in bed at night. This will cause major frustration to your child, as they may experience difficulties falling or staying asleep. It will also cause a disruptive for your sleep as your child may likely call you to help sooth them. To avoid this, it's best to read them a bedtime story before bedtime.
2. Unplug Electronics
Keep phones and/or video games out of the bedroom when it's time for bedtime. The bright blue light from the screens decreases melatonin production - a hormone that encourages us to fall asleep. Electronics in the bedroom can also delay bedtime. Once the child is left alone in the bedroom, it is easy for them to stay up all night if they have easy access to electronics.
3. Bathtime Before Bedtime
Bathing before bedtime helps the child relax and controls the body temperature to a comfortable state. After an active day out and about, nighttime bathing helps the child calm down for bedtime, increasing the quality of sleep.
4. Help Them Stay in Their Bedroom
If your child is having difficulties sleeping in their own bedroom, try reading a bedtime story and let them know they have permission to come into the parents room if they feel frightened during the night. If your child receives permission, they won't feel the need to come running into the parents room.
5. Create a Bedroom Designed For Sleep
The bedroom environment makes all the difference for a child to have a good night's sleep. Keep the bedroom temperature cool, block out unwanted noise, prevent sunlight from peeking through and make sure the mattress and pillow are supportive for their body type. A proper mattress and pillow should support the child's back, hips and shoulders. It also allows a child to avoid the risk of developing any orthopedic problems.
